URBSEC was established in 2011 through a shared initiative by University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology. Since 2018, the center is run as a University of Gothenburg operation only, but URBSEC continues to work with researchers from both universities and further builds upon existing long term collaboration between the two universities and external stakeholders.

The objective of URBSEC is to contribute to the crossing of borders between academic researchers and practitioners in order to develop research that responds to the complexity of urban safety and societal security concerns, as well as to problems as they are experienced by multiple stakeholders. Hence, URBSEC not only facilitates interdisciplinary research in its prioritized areas, but the ambition is also to build the center as an open site of interaction where not only researchers from the two universities come together, but also local and regional as well as national actors from both the public and private sector. Seeking to achieve both scholarly focused and professionally relevant knowledge is decisive for the capacity of the center to deliver in ways that reach across sectoral divides and offer ground for qualified assessments and judgments with regard to democratically desirable policies and solutions.
